What is the difference between SPT-1 and SPT-2 when it comes to Christmas lights?

In this video, I’m going to answer the question, what is the difference between SPT-1 and SPT-2? The simple answer is that SPT-2 wire has insulation that is 50% bigger than SPT-1, that’s it. The wire inside the insulation carries the same maximum current of 10 amps. So, this is a piece of SPT-1 Christmas cord. It’s used for most commercial applications, and more than likely, this is what you may have in your Christmas stash at home.

You can also see right there on the cord, it’s labeled SPT-1. This is a piece of SPT-2. You can see that the insulation is indeed thicker and we can also see it’s marked with SPT-2. And this wire is a good choice for installations that will be subjected to extreme cold, intense sun, or installed longer than the normal 90-day window.

Wondering which one to choose? The answer will depend on your budget since SPT-2 is more expensive than SPT-1, your environment, and availability. Also, be sure that no matter which one you choose, one or two, that when you choose accessories like these Gilbert plugs, you can see the channel that’s tailored or designed for the thickness of the insulation of the cord that you use or replacement sockets.

Where did that replacement… Oh, replacement sockets, especially our magnetic clips because these hold the sockets by holding that wire here within this little notch. So, that has to be properly matched as SPT-1 or 2 for your cord. Well, there you have it. Thank you for asking so many great questions. If you have more, please send them to us via email or chat, and I’m Shellie at Christmas Light Source.
